Church Notes August 2017 – East Baldwin Congregational Church

From the Pastor’s desk: Welcome to the month of August! In the world August is known for it’s dog days which do not have to do with dogs lying around in the heat—the phrase comes from ancient Greek beliefs about a star. To the Greeks and Romans, the “dog days” occurred around the day when Sirius appeared to rise just before the sun, in late July. They referred to these days as the hottest time of the year, a period that could bring fever, or even catastrophe. In the church calendar, this continues the Season after Pentecost when we learn more about Jesus’ ministry and his teachings. We will find that he frequently uses images of things that are small which have effects well beyond their appearance, such as mustard seed, salt, leaven. We start off with loaves and fish, continuing with walking on water, swallowing and being fit for the kingdom of God. Hope you will join us as we continue to wrestle with what it means to be a part of God’s kingdom.
